The U.S. Marine Corps' Light Assault Vehicle 25 (LAV) is an eight-wheeled,
armed, armored fighting vehicle and personnel carrier. Originally designed in
Switzerland, this armored fighting vehicle was adopted by the Canadian Army in
1977 as the Armored Vehicle, General Purpose. The LAV is street legal in the
U.S. and can be driven along any highway without a Department of Trans-
portation waiver.
The LAV-25 is armed with a Hughes M242 Bushmaster 25 millimeter chain gun
and a coaxial M240C 7.62mm machine gun mounted in a power-driven two-
personnel turret. This AFV can also mount a Mark 19 40mm grenade launcher, a
M2.50 caliber machine gun, or a M60 7.62mm machine gun.
All six versions of the LAV-25 carry a crew of three with room for six marines in
the cargo compartment. The LAV-25 is air transportable, carried inside the C-130
Hercules, C-141 Starlifter, or the C-5 Galaxy. It can also be carried in a sling
beneath the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter. The helicopter can ferry the
LAV-25 from amphibious assault ships directly to the beach.
The LAV-25 is deployed to Marine divisions and six additional companies located
with naval flotillas around the world.
